If you come unprepared, the first time you meet an album from these two weird guys you will probably end up disoriented. The label drone/doom metal doesn’t help at all, and you don’t know what to expect from Sunn O))). If you’re already familiar with this duo from Seattle you’d probably won’t give a damn, as I’m just babbling around, but in the case you are in the same situation as me, just before I was about to play them for the first time…well maybe you could find the following lines interesting.
First of all, I need to state that White1 is an absolute masterpiece, just in an odd way.
This music is remarkable for the way it makes you feel: it shakes you to the bones, it feeds your nightmares and it gets you trapped inside its overly-distorted-(guitar)noise-wall. And please avoid this record if you’re claustrophobic, it’ll hurt you really bad!
The music is a heap of hugely distorted guitars that growl like a fucking monster. Tons of feedbacks and synths, some vocals and an utterly malevolent aura.
My Wall stands out for the strange and unique spoken vocal, accompanied by some soft arpeggios, in the right speaker, and the usual huge amount of noise and guitar feedback in the left one. Maybe I’m wrong, but I feel like this one was record in a “heat of the moment” like session, and either way the final result is overwhelming. And this was my favourite track.
The other two are…ehm…well, awesome of course. But it won’t make any sense if I keep on telling you about noises, feedbacks, huge distortions and so on (just the Norwegian vocal on the 2nd track needs to be mentioned for his kinda of tone-deaf feels, take a look at it). So, I won’t keep on boring you, just give it a try if you’re in the mood of awakening your demons!
