Charun are a four piece Sardinian instrumental band, formed in 2013. Stige is their debut LP after the release of a demo.
The band labels itself as post-rock \ post-metal. Someone once said something among the lines of “the entire ‘post-‘ genre is made up of songs that just take too long to get to the point”. I can agree with that sort of funny oversimplification of the typical dilated arrangements in the genre since it’s basically true if taken with a grain of salt. However, for instance I can’t see what’s the “point” here.
I mean the tunes have a vibe we could indeed label as “heavy post-rock”, the riffs and the ambience are not bad per se but when put in context, arrangements are lacking direction. There’s no development but lots of start-stop moments with incongruent dynamics. The songs could have been way more evocative but they really don’t go anywhere. In addition, some tracks have the same exact intro.
Minus the couple heavy riffs, I could at least consider this as a guitar-based ambient album more than a proper post-rock one.
There’s so much more to post-rock arranging than just fiddling around with ambience effects on a couple suspended chords!
I’d say this debut is a decent try but the band needs way more experience and fine tuning on their craft to tickle my ears. Hope it will get better next time around!
A little side note on the production: the broad frequency spectrum of the muffled kick drum tends to congestion the low end and cloud up the whole mix when it gets going.
